Aloe vera is one species within a large group of succulent plants. Aloe Vera Varieties or Different Aloe Species?

The word “variety” is often used loosely by plant sellers.

Botanically, the following descriptions are different:

  • A species is a distinct recognised plant type, such as Aloe vera or Aloe ferox.
  • A botanical variety is a formally named subdivision within a species.
  • A cultivar is a selected plant maintained for particular garden characteristics.
  • A hybrid is produced by crossing two genetically different parents.
  • A common name may be used for several unrelated or closely related plants.

Aloe should not be described as a miracle plant that treats digestive illness, prevents infection, strengthens immunity, grows hair, cures acne, or replaces dental care.

NCCIH reports that topical aloe gel is generally well tolerated and that some research suggests possible benefits for certain burns or skin conditions. However, evidence is limited or insufficient for many promoted uses, including irritable bowel syndrome and several other conditions.

Minor skin use

A commercially prepared aloe gel may provide a cooling or moisturising feeling.

Before applying a product:
