How to use the Topsoil Calculator

  1. Enter the requested field, crop, animal, equipment, or cost information.
  2. Keep every value in the unit shown beside its field.
  3. Select Calculate and review each result and assumption.
  4. Verify important decisions with local records, labels, extension guidance, or a qualified adviser.

Formula and method

Base volume (ft³) = length × width × depth ÷ 12. Order volume = base volume × (1 + allowance). Cubic yards = ft³ ÷ 27.

The calculator converts the entered soil depth from inches to feet, calculates rectangular volume, then applies the selected allowance. Weight is shown only when a bulk density is supplied.

Worked example

A 30 ft × 20 ft area filled 4 inches deep requires about 7.41 yd³ before allowance, or about 8.15 yd³ with 10% extra.

Understanding the result

Treat the calculated values as a planning estimate. Compare them with your field records, product information, local conditions and operational capacity before acting.

Important: Delivered topsoil volume and density vary with moisture, compaction, organic matter and supplier measurement. Confirm ordering units and material characteristics with the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much topsoil I need?

Multiply area length by width, multiply by soil depth after converting depth to feet, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards or cubic metres. The calculator performs these conversions automatically.

Should I add extra topsoil for settling or uneven ground?

An allowance can help with minor variation, grading and handling. Use the percentage that fits your project and supplier guidance rather than assuming the default is appropriate everywhere.

Why is topsoil weight only an estimate?

Bulk density changes with moisture, compaction, texture and organic matter. For a weight estimate, enter a density supplied or measured for the actual material.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.
