What each calculator input means

Number of birds

Enter the number of birds expected to be fed during the period. If mortality, culling or flock transfers are substantial, use shorter periods or an average bird count rather than assuming the opening inventory remains unchanged. The field is entered in birds.

Feed per bird

Use a daily intake target appropriate to species, class, age, body size, environment and diet. This is a feed-budget input, not a value the calculator can choose for you. The field is entered in g/day.

Feeding period

Enter the number of days for which the intake assumption is expected to remain reasonably representative. Young birds can change intake rapidly, so stage-by-stage calculations may be more accurate. The field is entered in days.

Feed bag size

Use the net weight of the feed package you actually buy. The tool can convert total kilograms to bag equivalents, but purchasing usually requires rounding up to whole bags. The field is entered in kg.

Price per bag

Optional price should refer to the same bag size entered above. It estimates purchase value only and does not include delivery, storage loss, medication or feeding labor unless those are embedded in the price. The field is entered in currency.

Feed intake and nutrient requirement are different questions

A flock can consume the calculated kilograms yet still receive an unsuitable diet if protein, amino acids, minerals, vitamins or energy density are wrong. Feed formulation determines nutrient concentration; this calculator estimates how much of the chosen feed is required.

Short planning periods improve changing-flock estimates
