Average daily gain (ADG) expresses body-weight change per day between two weighings. It is widely useful for monitoring growing cattle and other meat animals, comparing groups and checking whether a feeding or grazing program is producing the expected rate of gain.
ADG is an average across the interval, not a measurement of identical gain every day. Gut fill, hydration, weighing time and scale conditions can move individual weights enough to distort short intervals, so consistent weighing practice improves interpretation.
The calculation uses comparable beginning and ending weights measured over the entered interval. The calculator subtracts initial weight from final weight to obtain total gain and divides that change by the number of days between measurements. A positive result indicates average gain; a negative result indicates average weight loss over the interval.
Both weights must use the same unit. This version labels kilograms, so convert pounds before entry if necessary. Days should be the actual elapsed days between weigh dates rather than the number of feeding days guessed from memory.
Use a measured starting weight from a reliable scale. Where possible, weigh animals under conditions similar to the final weighing to reduce differences caused by feed and water fill. The field is entered in kg.

Count calendar days between the two weighing dates. Very short intervals can magnify normal weight fluctuation, while very long intervals may hide changes in growth performance that occurred during the period. The field is entered in days.
Live weight includes gut contents and water, so animals can weigh differently even without a true change in tissue mass. Similar time of day, feed access, handling and scale setup can make repeated weights more comparable.
When management decisions depend on small differences in ADG, use enough animals and a long enough interval to reduce the influence of day-to-day noise. One unusually full or dehydrated weighing can otherwise create a misleading growth rate.
A strong gain rate may be desirable, but the economic question also depends on feed cost and feed efficiency. Conversely, low ADG may result from ration limitations, forage quality, disease, heat stress, parasites or management rather than simply insufficient feed quantity.
Pair ADG with feed-conversion information, body condition and health observations. A trend across several weigh periods is usually more useful than one isolated calculation.
An animal increasing from 250 kg to 400 kg over 150 days gains an average of 1.0 kg/day.

Compare observed ADG with the target for the class of animal and production system. If performance falls behind, investigate diet, forage, health, weather and weighing quality before changing the feeding program.
For groups, track both average and variation. A satisfactory group average can hide underperforming animals, while a few unusually heavy individuals can make a small group look better than it is.
ADG does not separate tissue growth from temporary changes in gut fill and hydration. It does not account for mortality, feed cost, carcass value, body composition or health status.
Use appropriate performance targets for species, age and production system. Where growth is unexpectedly poor or animals are ill, veterinary and nutrition assessment is more important than repeated arithmetic.
When ADG is used to compare treatments or pens, record weighing dates, scale conditions and any shrink protocol so the comparison can be repeated. Consistent records also help distinguish a genuine growth change from a one-off weight fluctuation caused by handling, feed fill or water intake.
