How to use the Sheep Gestation & Lambing Calculator

  1. Enter the requested field, crop, animal, equipment, or cost information.
  2. Keep every value in the unit shown beside its field.
  3. Select Calculate and review each result and assumption.
  4. Verify important decisions with local records, labels, extension guidance, or a qualified adviser.

Formula and method

Expected lambing date = breeding date + selected gestation days. Planning window = expected date ± selected window days.

The default 147-day gestation is a planning average for sheep. Penn State Extension notes breed-related variation, with many meat breeds around 144–147 days and wool breeds around 148–151 days.

Worked example

A ewe bred on October 1 with a 147-day gestation has an expected lambing date around February 25, with a ±3-day planning window if selected.

Understanding the result

Treat the calculated values as a planning estimate. Compare them with your field records, product information, local conditions and operational capacity before acting.

Important: This calculator estimates dates only. Actual lambing can occur earlier or later. Use flock records and veterinary guidance for pregnancy, lambing difficulties or animal-health decisions.

Frequently asked questions

How long is sheep gestation?

A common planning average is about 147 days, although gestation varies by breed and individual ewe. Use the calculator’s adjustable gestation field when you have a more appropriate flock-specific value.

How is the expected lambing date calculated?

The calculator adds the selected gestation length to the breeding or mating date and then shows an optional planning window around that estimated date.

Can a ewe lamb before or after the calculated date?

Yes. The date is an estimate, not a guarantee. Prepare ahead of the planning window and use flock records and veterinary advice when needed.

Is this a pregnancy diagnosis tool?

No. It only calculates dates from information you enter and does not confirm pregnancy or assess ewe or lamb health.
