Sprayer calibration connects nozzle discharge, travel speed and nozzle spacing to carrier volume per acre. This calculator uses the standard U.S. broadcast-sprayer relationship to estimate gallons per acre (GPA), then divides tank capacity by GPA to estimate acres covered per tank.
Calibration should be completed with water and verified under field conditions before pesticide or fertilizer mixing. Correct carrier volume does not authorize a pesticide rate; the product label remains the controlling source for application rate, restrictions, personal protective equipment and use directions.
The standard broadcast-sprayer relationship calculates application volume and tank coverage. For broadcast spraying, 5,940 multiplied by nozzle flow in gallons per minute and divided by mph times nozzle spacing in inches gives gallons per acre. Tank gallons divided by GPA gives theoretical acres per full tank.
This calculator uses U.S. gallons per minute, miles per hour, inches and U.S. gallons. Do not enter litres, kilometres per hour or centimetres without converting them to the displayed units.
Use measured average nozzle output in US gal/min at operating pressure. Catch and time discharge from several nozzles and replace worn or irregular nozzles according to manufacturer or Extension guidance. The field is entered in US gal/min.
Use actual field travel speed during application. Wheel slip, terrain and turns can make a dashboard setting differ from true ground speed. The field is entered in mph.
Enter nozzle spacing along the boom in inches for broadcast application. Special banded, directed or row applications may require a different calibration method. The field is entered in inches.
Use the usable spray tank volume. Foam, agitation, unusable heel and operational practice can make nominal capacity slightly different from mixable volume. The field is entered in US gallons.
Nozzles wear, clog and vary with pressure. Calibration based only on a nozzle color or catalog rating can therefore miss the actual discharge occurring on the machine.
Measure output from multiple nozzles, compare variation and verify pressure. Replacing outliers can improve distribution as well as average GPA.
GPA tells you how much carrier volume is applied per acre. The pesticide label tells you how much product may or must be applied for the labeled use. Changing GPA does not automatically justify changing product dose per acre.
After calibration, use acres per tank and the label rate to calculate product for the tank. Recalibrate when nozzles, speed, pressure or spacing change.
At 0.3 GPM, 5 mph and 20-inch spacing, output is 17.82 GPA and a 500-gallon tank covers about 28.1 acres.

If measured GPA differs from the intended carrier rate, adjust speed, pressure or nozzle selection within appropriate operating ranges and recalibrate. Avoid using pressure as the only correction when it harms droplet size or nozzle performance.
Once calibration is confirmed, calculate product amount from the legally controlling label and actual acres per tank. Record nozzle, pressure, speed and calibration date so the setup can be checked later.
The tool does not evaluate nozzle pattern, droplet spectrum, boom height, wind, pressure uniformity, band width or label compliance. Tank coverage is theoretical and may differ with partial fills or unusable tank volume.
Follow nozzle-manufacturer guidance, pesticide labels and applicable regulations. Calibration should be verified with clean water and safe procedures before handling pesticide mixtures.
Document the calibration setup each time: nozzle model, measured flow, pressure, speed, spacing and carrier rate. That record makes later troubleshooting much easier and provides a clear checkpoint when a nozzle set is replaced, an application rate changes or field conditions require a different operating speed.
