How to use the Sod Calculator

  1. Enter the requested field, crop, animal, equipment, or cost information.
  2. Keep every value in the unit shown beside its field.
  3. Select Calculate and review each result and assumption.
  4. Verify important decisions with local records, labels, extension guidance, or a qualified adviser.

Formula and method

Base area = length × width. Sod to order = base area × (1 + waste allowance). Pieces = order area ÷ coverage per piece, rounded up.

The calculator measures a rectangular area, applies the cutting/waste allowance, then divides by the supplier-stated coverage per roll or piece.

Worked example

A 40 ft × 25 ft lawn is 1,000 ft². With 8% extra, order about 1,080 ft² of sod, or 108 pieces if each covers 10 ft².

Understanding the result

Treat the calculated values as a planning estimate. Compare them with your field records, product information, local conditions and operational capacity before acting.

Important: Actual roll, slab and pallet sizes vary by sod supplier and region. Confirm piece coverage, pallet quantities and pricing before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How much sod should I order?

Measure the installation area, then add an allowance for cutting and fitting. The calculator reports both the measured area and the order area after the allowance.

How does the calculator determine the number of sod rolls?

It divides the order area by the coverage per roll or piece that you enter and rounds up to a whole piece.

Are sod roll sizes standard?

No. Roll, slab and pallet dimensions vary by supplier and region, so enter the coverage stated by the supplier you plan to use.

Can I estimate sod cost?

Yes. Enter an optional price per square foot and the calculator will multiply it by the order area.
